How do dealer video ads stay in sync with inventory?

They read the same inventory feed that keeps your website current, so the ads change when the lot does. New arrivals get an ad automatically. A price change rebuilds the ad with the new number, and when a unit sells and leaves the feed, its ad comes down the same day.

Where does the inventory data come from?

Most stores already send their stock to several places through an inventory feed from their inventory or website provider. VinScroll builds the ads from the feed your inventory provider already sends, and an SFTP export works too. You approve the feed request once, and nobody re-enters a car by hand.

What happens when a unit changes?

Each kind of change in the feed has a matching change on the ads.

  • New arrival: the unit gets its own video ad automatically
  • Price change: the ad is rebuilt with the new price
  • Sold: the unit drops off the feed, and its ad comes down the same day

How often do the ads update?

Only as often as your feed does. Feed-driven ads can't be more current than the data they read, so a price change reaches the ad after your provider sends the next feed. If you're not sure how often yours sends, ask your provider.

Why do stale ads cost you?

A shopper who taps an ad for a truck and lands on a sold page, or sees a price that doesn't match your site, starts to doubt your other ads too. In our research on how dealers talk about ad vendors, one dealership user praised a vendor by name because its ads never ran for units no longer in stock, a problem they had with other vendors. One dealer-group marketing manager said the group has a data person who deals with the feeds from the stock system to the website and third-party sites.

Common questions

What if my feed has the wrong price?

Then the ad shows the wrong price too, because it reads the feed. Fix the price in your inventory system, and the ad is rebuilt once the corrected feed comes through. Check that prices and photos are right in the source system, since every channel fed from it shows the same mistake.

Do I need to tell anyone when a car sells?

No. When the unit is marked sold in your inventory system, it drops off the feed, and its ad comes down the same day. Nobody at the store has to email a list of sold units or log in to pause an ad.

Which inventory feeds does VinScroll work with?

VinScroll works from the feed your inventory provider already sends, and an SFTP export works too. You approve the feed request once. If you're not sure what your system can send, ask your provider where it can send the feed. Adding a new feed source is usually a small job.
