Automotive Inventory Ads vs Vehicle Listing Ads: what's the difference?
Automotive Inventory Ads (AIA) are Meta's feed-driven ads that show your units to shoppers on Facebook and Instagram, mostly as photos. Vehicle Listing Ads (VLA) are Google's feed-driven listings that show your units when someone searches for a car. Both run off the same inventory feed, so the difference is where shoppers see your cars.
What are Meta Automotive Inventory Ads?
AIA is Meta's catalog ad format for dealers. You connect an inventory feed, Meta builds a vehicle catalog, and the ads pull units from it. Meta picks which cars to show each person based on what they have browsed, on your site and elsewhere. The creative is usually the unit's photos in a single image or a carousel, with price and mileage pulled from the feed.
What are Google Vehicle Listing Ads?
VLA is Google's inventory format. Your feed goes into Google Merchant Center, and your units can show as listings with a photo, price, and mileage when someone searches for a vehicle, including on Google Maps and the Shopping tab. The shopper has already typed what they want, so VLA works on declared intent. You don't produce any creative beyond the feed and its photos.
How do they compare side by side?
Both formats run off your inventory feed, so both stay close to what is on the lot. The differences are where they show and what the shopper is doing at the time.
| Meta AIA | Google VLA | Per-VIN video | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Format | Single image or carousel ad | Search listing with photo, price, and miles | Short vertical video per unit |
| Where it shows | Facebook and Instagram feeds | Google Search, Maps, and Shopping | Facebook and Instagram Reels, Stories, and feed |
| What drives it | Your inventory feed and Meta's audience signals | Your inventory feed and the shopper's search | Your inventory feed and in-market targeting around your rooftop |
| Typical creative | The unit's photos | The unit's lead photo | The unit's photos cut into a branded video |
Where does per-VIN video fit?
Per-VIN video runs on the same Meta placements AIA uses and off the same kind of feed, but each unit gets a video instead of a photo. It does not replace VLA, since search and social catch shoppers at different moments. A store can run VLA for shoppers who are searching and use video on Meta to put specific units in front of in-market shoppers who have not searched yet.

Common questions
Do I need both AIA and VLA?
Not always, but they cover different shoppers. VLA shows your units to people searching on Google, and AIA shows them to people on Facebook and Instagram who have not searched yet. If your budget only covers one, look at where your VDP traffic already comes from and test the channel that is missing.
Can Automotive Inventory Ads use video?
Not in the standard format. Meta's standard setup builds catalog ads from the feed's images. Running a distinct video for every unit takes separate work to build and keep matched to stock.
What do AIA and VLA need from my store?
Both need a clean inventory feed with accurate price, mileage, photos, and VDP links for every unit. Meta needs a catalog connected to your ad account. Google needs a Merchant Center account linked to Google Ads. Most dealer website providers can supply the feed.
