Can dealers still list cars on Facebook Marketplace?

Not from a dealership's business Page. Since January 30, 2023, Meta has not let business Pages create vehicle listings on Marketplace, and it said it would delete the listings those Pages had up. People can still list their own cars for free. For a dealer, the routes left to Marketplace shoppers are mostly paid ads.

What changed for dealers on Marketplace in 2021?

Provider feeds went first. AutoSweet, an inventory provider whose feeds were affected, told dealers in May 2021 that Meta would stop showing inventory partner catalogs on Marketplace on September 13, 2021. After that date, units sent through providers' catalog feeds no longer appeared in Marketplace for free.

What changed in January 2023?

As CBT News reported in October 2022, Meta announced that business Pages would lose the ability to create vehicle listings on January 30, 2023, along with the Vehicles and Manage Inventory tabs. Meta said it would delete the existing listings those Pages had made, and described the change as a shift in how inventory is distributed.

What can a dealership still do on Marketplace for free?

Individuals can still list their own vehicles at no cost. Meta's commerce policies limit selling business inventory from personal profiles, and Meta has already changed the Marketplace rules for dealers twice, so read the current policy before anyone at the store posts units that way. The labor is the other problem. Each listing is typed in by hand, every price change means an edit, and someone has to delete the unit when it sells. jenniferexclusive, a new marketing hire at a used lot of about 50 units, wrote on DealerRefresh in December 2023: "Ive posted all of our inventory on marketplace, I make tiktoks, and I make FB posts pretty regularly but nothing is really taking off."

What are the paid ways to reach Marketplace shoppers?

Meta left the paid side open. Marketplace is one of the placements you can choose in Ads Manager, next to Feed, Reels, and Stories. The main options:

  • Automotive inventory ads (AIA), Meta's catalog ads that fill one template with units from your vehicle feed
  • Ads for a single unit, image or video, that link to its vehicle detail page (VDP)
  • Boosted posts from your Page, which give you less control over targeting and placements

Where do per-unit video ads fit after the Marketplace change?

Each one shows one car, its price, and your store, links to that unit's VDP, and reaches in-market shoppers in your radius. The differences are that you pay for the reach, and when the ads run off your inventory feed, a sold unit's ad comes down without anyone deleting a listing. To decide whether the spend is worth it, compare cost per VDP view against what your listing sites charge for the same eyeballs on your cars.

Will Meta change the rules again?

Nobody outside Meta can say. Dealers have watched free distribution on Marketplace shrink twice in less than two years, first for provider feeds and then for business Pages. Ads that run in your own ad account depend less on what any one free feature allows, since you control the spend, the targeting, and the campaign history.

Common questions

Can salespeople list dealership cars from their personal profiles?

Check Meta's commerce policies first, because they limit business selling from personal profiles. Even where a listing is allowed, every one needs its own price updates and its own removal when the unit sells, typed in by hand.

Do automotive inventory ads show on Marketplace?

They can. Marketplace is one of the placements Meta can use for ads. Check the placement breakdown in Ads Manager to see how much of your spend ran there.

How does VinScroll fit if Marketplace listings are gone?

VinScroll makes a vertical video ad for each unit in your inventory feed and runs it as paid ads in your own Meta ad account, aimed at in-market shoppers in your radius. Price changes rebuild the ad, and sold units come down the same day.
