Inventory ads or lifestyle ads: which should a dealer run?

If the goal is to move metal, put most of the budget into inventory ads. They show an in-market shopper one specific unit, its price, and a link to its VDP. Lifestyle ads can keep the store's name in front of people, but in one Iowa store's account in August 2026, they trailed far behind.

What's the difference between inventory ads and lifestyle ads?

An inventory ad sells a car you have on the lot. A lifestyle ad sells a feeling or the store itself, aimed at people grouped by interests or life stage.

Which one did better in a real dealer account?

In one Iowa store's Meta account in August 2026, the per-unit inventory ads drew a 4.93% click-through rate. LocaliQ/WordStream's Facebook Ads Benchmarks 2025 put the automotive category at about 0.8%, though that category tracks repair, services, and parts rather than dealer sales. The same store's lifestyle-audience ad set, running that month on the same platform, did worse than Meta's automotive prospecting benchmark. The two differed in what they showed and who they were aimed at: a specific car for in-market shoppers on one side, a lifestyle audience on the other.

Does one store's result prove inventory ads always win?

No. It is one store over a few weeks, and your market, inventory, and pricing are different. Treat it as a reason to run your own test. The test costs little: run both as separate campaigns in your own ad account for the same period and compare what each one costs per VDP view.

When does a lifestyle ad make sense?

When there's no specific unit to sell. A grand opening, a service special, a hiring push, or a sales event built around the store all fit a lifestyle ad. When the goal is to sell the cars on the lot, a shopper scrolling a feed wants to see the truck, the trim, and the price.

How should a dealer split the budget?

Cover the whole lot with inventory ads first, so every unit in stock reaches in-market shoppers. If you want lifestyle ads too, give them a smaller, separate budget. Check both every month in cost per VDP view, and keep the campaign that sends shoppers to cars for less.

Common questions

Are Meta's Automotive Inventory Ads the same as inventory ads?

They are one kind. Automotive Inventory Ads pull from your inventory feed and usually show photos or a carousel. Per-unit video ads use the same kind of feed but give each unit its own vertical video. Both show a specific car, so both count as inventory ads.

Can I run both at once?

Yes. Run them as separate campaigns with separate budgets so you can read each one's numbers. If the lifestyle campaign can't show VDP traffic or calls you can trace back to it after a full month, cut it first.

What does VinScroll run?

Inventory ads. It builds one video ad for each unit in your inventory feed and runs them to in-market shoppers near your rooftop, in your own Meta ad account. New arrivals get an ad automatically, and sold units come down the same day.
